For a great deal of you this is going to be shocking, but to those who know me and my family well or on a personal level it probably will not be as surprising. In less than thirty days, SoundSide will be celebrating its 11-year anniversary on June 4, 2022. That day will be our last day serving you all and the last day of SoundSide Restaurant. This is so bittersweet and a decision that has been struggled with. There is never going to be a good time to end this, but the thought has been there for quite a while. It just seemed fitting to at least make it the 11 years. We are extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant and that we were able to succeed as long as we have. In my opinion, SoundSide has provided so much more than delicious food.

For so many of our customers, I feel it has provided nourishment for the soul. I will miss being your favorite “bartender” who remembers your drink and everything about you. I will miss you all chatting with my Mom (Babs) and your favorite server while sitting at the bar or your table that makes you feel most comfortable. I will miss seeing my hardworking and supportive staff in the back and front of the house take extra care always to provide you all with a wonderful experience. All of these small gestures and so many more are what has made SoundSide feel like home. It has been a gathering place to share accounts of our days, celebrate big events in lives for customers, and share a meal with friends. We have been blessed to serve our community in so many ways and beyond grateful with the support of our community in return. I have watched patrons become long lasting friends in SoundSide. All of you have not just been our friends and customers, but you have and will always be a part of our SoundSide family. Those memories will last a life time. Ultimately, our lives became richer and fuller because of you.

It is no secret that the restaurant business is a lifestyle. For quite a bit now, it is just not as rewarding as it used to be. We are busier than we have ever been. Now isn’t that interesting? In the midst of a global pandemic, largest labor shortage ever seen, and the largest spike in costs to us and others it is just simply discouraging as a small business. Please understand this is not a matter of a financial issue and money does not determine keeping our door open. We have been so thankful for the support over these 11 years. This isn’t me or my family giving up. If I wanted to give up, I probably would have made this decision a long time ago. I just have nothing more to give of myself to this endeavor. It is disheartening to put in the hours and all the time to feel like you aren’t continuing to get ahead after all these years. It is very much known if we are open, we are there and we work. We work hard. I am there. My mom is there. Our dedicated and long-term family of staff is there. We are small, but mighty. But this has also made SoundSide the welcoming establishment it is.

While I am younger, I would like to enjoy aspects of life. This job/profession was my choice, but the opportunity just hasn’t been there to take the necessary time off to not be consumed by this business. I have been consumed for a long time and I want to feel happy again. Unfortunately, I have many regrets. Many of you know my story. I have had years of stories that include trials and tribulations…as we all have all the time. I have always overcome, put one foot in front of the other, put my feelings aside, and continued to keep SoundSide in a forward direction. This past year has been the hardest time of my life personally and I still deal with that every single day. I put a smile on and make sure everyone has a great experience at the restaurant or at least try my hardest. We genuinely care about your experience. Most importantly, I have learned if you are no longer happy in the season of your life and doing what you do every day, it is time to make a change for the betterment of yourself.

I was asked not that long ago to name the three reasons why I continue to have SoundSide. It took me mere seconds to answer. The first was “for my staff,” the second was “for my customers,” and the third was “to have a purpose and a job.” I realized that none of those three reasons were for myself. Life is much too short and precious to be spent bending your boundaries and limiting your own happiness. Do what is best for you. Grief has changed me. I heal a little more each day, but I am rebuilding myself around that tragic loss. Tragedy changes your perspective and it forces you to recalibrate. I project an image around all of you, but I am less and less interested in doing that anymore. I am not letting go of my dreams, but I am going to make new dreams. I am not sure yet what is next for me, but it will be a new season and a fresh start that I need. I look around and I feel so much gratitude for what we have already created. This decision has taken so much courage. Courage in taking a chance and finding inspiration to make the next move…whatever that may be. The restaurant business is all I have ever known and I am proud of what has been accomplished.

I am excited and nervous to figure out what is next, but I look forward to the change. In the meantime, I am going to take an opportunity to enjoy life a little. I am certainly not retiring though! I hope wherever God leads me next that you all will continue to support me. My faith has not wavered and my mind is being transformed.

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- His good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Family-owned, local restaurants are a place of camaraderie in good times and bad. Please always remember to eat local and support all of your hard-working restauranteurs in our area. It is their livelihood too, along with so many other local small businesses. It is tough work and your support is so appreciated. Thank you all again for the countless times you have visited our establishment and all of the memories we will always keep close to our hearts. We are eternally grateful.
